Original Source: How To Number Pages in Microsoft Word
A large document without page numbers is really a hassle to keep in order. Add page numbers to your documents in Word 2007 and 2010 using the following options:
Open the Word document you wish to add Page numbers to, click the Insert option on the topmost strip and hit Page Number. It will give you a number of formats to choose from, also, where you want it to appear on the page.
Once you select your desired format e.g. “Bold Numbers 1”, it will appear on your page as Footer format.
Selecting page number format will open up Header and Footer Tools under the Design tab. You will have various options to select from for your Document such as ‘Different First Page’ and others.
To see how to number pages in word works in your printed hard copy of document, you can go to Print Preview and see if you got what you wanted otherwise you can always close the Preview and change the format again.
