Pentax K-01: Mirrorless but not weightless

Test: New K-01 is a totally different camera than the Pentax Q that showed up last year. In fact, K-01 is a very different camera than what we compare it to.

Get SLRs have been so chipped and fragmented reception that Pentax K-01. Some love it, some hate it, and the majority seems most confused by it. After using it a few days, we are also split. Crazy or genius? Good question, a little of both, we would say. Samsung and Sony builds mirror solve the cameras with the same size sensor as K-01, APS-C. But they have shrunk considerably houses and created new lens fittings that sits closer to the sensor. Which also means new lenses because the traditional built for a longer distance to the sensor.

Pentax has been in K-01 decided to keep K-bayonet from their traditional SLR cameras and can therefore use all Pentax lenses. The catch here is that objective lenses sit close to 30 millimetres from the sensor and K-01 will therefore be around 15 millimetres thicker than Samsung NX or a Sony.

You have quite a small space between the lens and the sensor being used for anything. Without the mirror, but heavy nonetheless short, Pentax has removed the mirror and the optical viewfinder, but did not use it to make the camera either smaller or lighter. In fact, K-01 is almost on the dot as heavy and only slightly less than the Nikon D5100, which is built around the same sensor, but with a mirror, an optical viewfinder, and to top it all hinged display. If you compare this with the Sony Nex 5N, which is also built around the same sensor, so it weighs just over half, and is noticeably smaller. It also lacks detectors, but is tiltable screen. It's a mystery why not K-01 has an electronic viewfinder. You are entirely directed to the screen which is indeed very good, but not to angle. We have mentioned the sensor several times and here Pentax done the right thing. This is basically the same excellent sensor at 16.2 megapixels are in Pentax K-5, the Nikon D7000 and D5100, and the Sony Nex C3 and Nex 5N. It provides K-01 a great image quality all the way up to ISO 3200 and where in particular ISO 6400, but, indeed, 12 800 is really useful. Are you using raw files, you can lighten shadows and thus achieve a great dynamic range in images. Another positive thing about K-01 is that it is generally as easy to work with that of other Pentax cameras.
