Vincent Jackson: Both Receivers Miss Two Straight Days Of Practice

Posted on October 03, 2011 12:54 PM

Despite being 2-1, the San Diego Chargers have not looked like a safe bet so far this season. Right now the Bolts need a slump-buster, and on Sunday they get the gift of a home game against the 0-3 Miami Dolphins.

As always, the Chargers are led by quarterback Philip Rivers, who has had a tough start. The three-time Pro Bowler has completed 86-of-126 passes (68.3 percent) for 979 yards, but has just four touchdowns against six interceptions. Rivers has been shaky when pressured, which is not a characteristic he has shown in the past. He is typically one of the league's most accurate quarterbacks and rarely gets rattled.

Luckily for Rivers, Vincent Jackson has reemerged as a go-to threat. Jackson has already caught 17 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns. His rare combination of size and speed has given his quarterback some leeway when throwing his direction.

Second-year running back Ryan Mathews has also looked capable of being a full-time ball carrier this season. Mathews has rushed for 207 yards on just 45 attempts, while scoring three touchdowns.

All of those elements give the Chargers what should be one of the best offenses in the NFL, but for some reason the Bolts have struggled to put points on the board. Despite ranking fourth in the league by averaging 417.3 yards of total offense, San Diego is averaging just 21.7 points per game (15th in the NFL.)

The San Diego Chargers completed their Thursday practice session and both Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd have missed both Wednesday and Thursday practices. While there is still a good chance they play on Sunday, they will likely join the flotilla of game-time decisions around the league. Arguably the most significant news surrounding this was Norv Turner's statement that neither likely could have practiced on Thursday even if it was essential that they do practice.

Although Floyd is less of a fantasy option at this point, Jackson remains a guy fantasy owners would like to start on a regular basis. The Chargers play in a 4:15pm ET game, which means you might be left guessing what his status will be just prior to 1:00pm. If you're stuck in that situation, we'll have to see if he practices tomorrow. If he is limited I'd suspect he plays. One strategy I try and use is if I have a questionable wide receiver (or running back) playing in a late afternoon game, I'll try and move my weakest late player into my flex position so I at least have some measure of flexibility.

The more I study this game, the more I think it’s going to be decided by the quarterbacks.

I know, genius, right?

But seriously, for both defenses, it comes down to stopping the opposing quarterback.

For Wisconsin, they have to figure out an option offense that really doesn’t have an idenity. It’s not really a spread, but it’s not really a pro-style either. Nebraska is going to show a lot of different looks, trying to confuse the linebackers and safeties and make it hard on Chris Ash to call blitzes.
