The first thing that you need to start with is keywords. Google has a free keyword tool that you can use to generate a lot of keywords that you can rank high for - that have very little competition. If you really want to step things up, you can use a monthly service called "Keyword Discovery", that will deliver to you up to 10,000 variations of a main keyword term - all that you can rank high for. But this tool isn't free... it costs about $60 a month to use their services. But it's worth it.
Now I mentioned keywords. Some people will say to target "long tail" keyword terms. These are basically keywords that is essentially a "phrase" (so to speak). So for example, a regular keyword such as "marketing" may be high in competition. But a long tail keyword term such as "marketing for my bakery business" is something that probably won't have a lot of competition.
See the difference here? The more relevant and long tail keywords that you can pick out, the better. This is something that isn't hard, and like I said, you can use Google's free keyword tool, or use a keyword tool like Keyword Discovery to find tons of long tail keyword terms like this.
When picking your keywords, it's essential that you make sure that it's supposed to make it seem like your website is centered around a particular topic... which is whatever your main keyword phrase is. So if your site is about "marketing", then make sure that all of the pages of your website is about marketing. And be sure to write content and develop articles that are centered around your long tail keyword term. But don't overdo it.
There is something called "keyword density" with is basically a percentage about how often your keyword phrase should show up on your webpage. Generally, a keyword density of around 3% is sufficient. This means that for every 100 words on your website, you will mention your keyword term 1 time.
If you try to stuff your webpage with your keyword terms, the search engines like Google will pick up on this, and will obviously see that you're trying to "game" them.
