About
A booming World War II economy saw a man in Glenside, Pennsylvania looking to bless his family with a stable future. It is not likely that Gerhard's Appliance founder Charles E. Gerhard could have anticipated 60 years, new locations, and as many children, grand children and friends to steward his dream into the 21st century.
Charles Gerhard left the Philco Corporation after patenting the Ice Cube Tray for a $3 dollar commission. His new storefront on Easton Road sold United States Army surplus radios and was named Gerhard's Inc. As the home appliance industry grew, so did his dream. At least one home on every block had a television for neighbors to gather around and view prize fights through snowy picture tubes. Dishwashers, automatic washers and dryers and electric ovens were soon the envy of every family. "I want to sell you this appliance, but I want to service it too" said Gerhard. Thus setting the business plan; "Our service makes the best products better"
Our long time customers remember the second generation of Gerhard's: Jay, Charles Jr., Carroll (Pete), Edward and Marjorie. Alongside their father, they set the standard of excellence and commitment to service that thrives at our two locations today. With Charles Jr., as President, Gerhard's measured growth reflected a commitment to American made products. RCA, Philco, Speed Queen and Amana were popular brands of the day. Gerhard's moved to a larger location at the site of our current flagship store on Keswick Ave. Our Record Shop often hosted popular singers signing autographs and records. Live broadcasts were very popular.
As DVD players replaced HiFi, dish drawers and warming drawers are now common in kitchens, microwave and convection cooking meets the time demands of our moving society. Name brands such as Miele, Viking, Kitchen Aid and Dacor offer un-paralleled products that can be viewed in our operational state of the art showrooms.
"The Living Kitchen" is our newest venture.
Charles E. Gerhard III, now the third generation President of Gerhard's wants you to know that our family is committed to your family...
"It is the work of our everyday to protect the investment that you have made in your appliances. We were doing that yesterday, today and we will be doing that tomorrow. Our service still makes the best products better!"
